Bas Beaujean is a postdoctoral researcher in archaeology at KU Leuven, with a focus on the urbanization and social memory processes of Hellenistic, Roman, and Early Byzantine Anatolia. He earned his PhD in 2022 with a dissertation titled Making Memories in the Mountains, which investigated how social memory processes influenced social identities and urban spaces at Roman Imperial Sagalassos. Since 2012, Bas has participated in the archaeological excavations at Sagalassos, and since 2015, he has taken on the role of site supervisor.
His research centers on the dynamic interplay between change and continuity in sustaining long-term urban developments in Hellenistic and Roman Anatolia. This includes exploring the relationship between social memories, daily social practices – such as public bathing – and funerary customs. Bas has presented his work at international conferences and has published on topics ranging from Roman architecture to the role of social memory in shaping urban spaces. In addition to his academic work, he has co-organized workshops and exhibitions, fostering a dialogue between archaeology, the academic community, and the wider public.
Dr. Beaujean is present at Bilkent during the Autumn Semester of 2024-2025, to attend the 3rd Pisidia Symposium at Bilkent in November 2024 and to prepare a joint paper with Dr. Talloen for the conference “Urban Dynamics in Roman Anatolia: Investigating the emergence and development of the Roman City in North-Central Anatolia”, to be held at METU in February 2025.”
