Department Activities

Activities outside of the classroom are an important part of the learning experience for Bilkent's Department of Archaeology students. Guided field trips are an integral part of many courses, during which the students are given the opportunity to experience what sites and landscapes really look like. Students also get practical training, both in class and in the field where they can enjoy hands-on archaeology during summer excavations. The following photographs are a sample illustrating what our students can do in the Department.

Fieldtrip to Troia and the Troad (28 April – 1 May 2017)Türkçe

In the Spring 2017, students and staff from the Bilkent Department of Archaeology and various other departments embarked on a four-day journey to celebrate Homer's fabled landscapes. The study trip was organized and lead by Dr. Thomas Zimmermann, Assistant Professor at the Department of Archaeology and and an intimate fancier of Troian archaeology since the bygone times of his Master thesis project.

The study group had the chance not only to experience the fabled ruins of Hisarlık / Troia, but also to contemplate the beauty of Assos-Behramkale, dwell into the obscure mysteries of the Lord of the Mice-cult at Apollo Smintheion, and visit the ruins of Alexandria Troas – once almost declared the new capital of the Roman empire.

The great success of this fieldtrip makes it highly plausible that another Homeric voyage will be organized in the coming Spring semester.
